Lubing Switches for Beginners: What It Does, What It Doesn't, and When to Skip It (2026)
Every modding tutorial treats lubing as step zero. It isn’t — it’s a decision, and in 2026 the default answer for a first build has changed: factory pre-lube got good. This guide covers what lube actually does mechanically, what to lube and what to never touch, a realistic tool and time budget, and the case for skipping it entirely — which is now the legitimate default, not laziness.
What lube mechanically does
Plastic stems slide in plastic housings; dry plastic-on-plastic friction is the enemy every switch fights. Lube fills microscopic surface roughness and reduces friction — that’s the entire claim, and it’s chemistry, not mysticism. Cherry ships MX2A switches “lubricated” with “factory-applied, premium-grade lubricant” (official wording); Keychron pre-lubes the Super and K Pro lines (official pages). The mod scene exists because factory application is thin and selective — hand-lubing is more thorough, not magic.
Where lube goes — and the two places it must never go:

The tool list (complete, not the influencer version)
- One lube appropriate to your switches (thin oil for linears; slightly thicker grease for tactile legs and stab wires — many modders carry one of each)
- Switch opener (or a flat tool that won’t crack housing tabs)
- Small brush (a size 0–2 artist brush is the standard)
- Lube station or a piece of foam board to hold open switches upright
- Keycap/switch puller (you’ll have this from any hot-swap board)

This table is why the strategy question comes before the technique question. Lube your stabs — they’re the worst rattle offenders on every stock board, and they take an hour. Decide about switches afterward, with pre-lube quality in mind.
The decision tree
- Switches are factory pre-lubed (Super, K Pro, G Pro, MX2A…): skip switch lubing on build one. Ride the stock experience; you’ll know what you want to change after a month.
- Budget switches without pre-lube: hand-lube the linears, or accept them as-is and upgrade via hot-swap later — that’s what the sockets are for.
- Stabilizers rattle (they usually do): lube the wires and housings regardless of everything else. Highest value per minute in the hobby.
- Clicky switches: don’t lube. The click mechanism doesn’t want oil.
