How to Build Your First Custom Keyboard: Parts, Order of Operations, Budget (2026)
Every build thread eventually asks the same three questions: what parts, in what order, and what will it cost. This guide answers all three for a hot-swap first build — no soldering, no group-buy waiting, no hobbyist baggage. The parts chain — what each piece does

Three clarifications the spec sheets don’t make:
- The PCB is the board’s brain — QMK/VIA programmability lives there, not in the case. The V1/Q1/K2 Pro all run the same STM32L432 MCU (official pages), so the “smart” part is identical across price tiers.
- The case’s material and mass are the biggest physical difference between a $65 kit and a $200 kit (V1’s ABS tray-mount case vs Q1’s 1825 g CNC aluminum — both official figures).
- Plate stiffness is a real choice: steel is the stiffest common plate; it changes how each keystroke bottoms out. Both the V1 and Q1 ship steel plates officially.
Order of operations (the mistake-preventing sequence)
- Bench test the bare PCB. Before assembly: plug in the bare board, open a key tester page, press every position with a switch or a keycap puller. Dead row found now costs minutes; found after assembly, it costs a teardown.
- Stabilizers in. Screw-in stabs mount to the PCB; seat the wires properly under the stem.
- Lube, if you’re lubing. Stabs benefit most from lubing on a first build; switches can wait (factory pre-lube is standard — Keychron states it directly for Super/K Pro lines).
- Plate + PCB into the case. Screw down the tray mount or stack the gasket assembly.
- Switches in. Straight down, check for bent pins if a key doesn’t register — this is why bench testing came first.
- Keycaps on. OSA/Cherry/OEM — whatever the set is.
- Full key test again. Same tester page, every key, then remap a key in VIA to confirm programmability end-to-end.

What to skip on build one (and one thing you shouldn’t)
- Lubing all switches. Pre-lubed switches make this optional; the time cost is hours for a gain you can’t judge yet.
- Barebone + expensive keycaps first. Keycaps are the budget trap — a $100 capset on a $65 kit inverts the priorities. Caps upgrade in five minutes later.
- Group buys. Your first build should ship from stock. Group buys are for after you know what you like.
