How to Build Your First Custom Keyboard: Parts, Order of Operations, Budget (2026)

Every build thread eventually asks the same three questions: what parts, in what order, and what will it cost. This guide answers all three for a hot-swap first build — no soldering, no group-buy waiting, no hobbyist baggage. The parts chain — what each piece does

Three clarifications the spec sheets don’t make:

Order of operations (the mistake-preventing sequence)

  1. Bench test the bare PCB. Before assembly: plug in the bare board, open a key tester page, press every position with a switch or a keycap puller. Dead row found now costs minutes; found after assembly, it costs a teardown.
  2. Stabilizers in. Screw-in stabs mount to the PCB; seat the wires properly under the stem.
  3. Lube, if you’re lubing. Stabs benefit most from lubing on a first build; switches can wait (factory pre-lube is standard — Keychron states it directly for Super/K Pro lines).
  4. Plate + PCB into the case. Screw down the tray mount or stack the gasket assembly.
  5. Switches in. Straight down, check for bent pins if a key doesn’t register — this is why bench testing came first.
  6. Keycaps on. OSA/Cherry/OEM — whatever the set is.
  7. Full key test again. Same tester page, every key, then remap a key in VIA to confirm programmability end-to-end.

The legitimate shortcut: buy assembled, mod later
