Linear vs Tactile vs Clicky: Switch Types Explained (2026)
Every mechanical keyboard debate eventually bottoms out in one question: linear, tactile, or clicky? This guide explains what those words actually mean — mechanically, not marketing-ly — and gives you a decision path that doesn’t require buying nine sample packs.
The mechanical difference (two minutes)
Under every keycap sits a switch — a housing, a spring, a stem. The stem is where families differ:

Two things worth internalizing:
- The bump is a physical event, not a sound. A tactile switch’s bump happens because the stem or leaf has a raised feature your finger passes over. Removing it (or lubing over it aggressively) turns a tactile into a linear — which is why lubing tactiles is its own skill.
- Clicky = tactile + an extra part. A click jacket or click bar deliberately snaps to make the sound. That’s why clickies are the loudest and why de-clicking (removing the jacket) is a known mod that converts many clickies into decent tactiles.
What each family is actually good for
Linear — the default recommendation, and mostly correctly. The smooth press suits gaming (quick re-presses, holding keys partway), and linears are the most forgiving family for budget factories to produce consistently. Downsides: without a bump, your fingers tend to bottom out every keystroke, which over long sessions fatigues more than you’d expect.
Tactile — the typist’s pick. The bump confirms actuation without bottoming out, which is genuinely more comfortable across a workday. The honest caveat: “tactile” spans a huge range, from aggressive rounded bumps to gentle rounded ones, and a weak-bump tactile can feel like a scratchy linear. Tactile strength varies more between models than families vary from each other.
Clicky — the niche family, honestly labeled. The click is satisfying for solo use, and some people type faster with the audible confirmation. But it’s loud enough to be picked up by microphones in calls, annoying to roommates, and most owners quietly drift back to tactiles or linears. Start here only if you work alone and know you love loud keyboards.
The switch-sound trap
Sound descriptions — “thocky,” “clacky,” “marbly,” “pingy” — describe a board, not a switch. The same linear switch sounds different in an aluminum gasket-mount case versus a hollow plastic tray-mount one: case material, plate, foam, keycap thickness, and stabilizers all shape the sound more than the switch itself. When a review says “these switches sound amazing,” read it as “this board sounds amazing.”

Spec sheets list actuation force and bottom-out force (e.g., “45g actuation / 55g bottom-out”). What matters in practice:
- Under ~40g bottom-out: very light — fast for gaming, easy to accidentally trigger while resting fingers.
- 40–50g: the comfort zone most people settle in.
- 55g+: deliberately weighty; reduces typos for heavy-handed typists, tiring for others.
Spring weight is per-model, per-family — a “light linear” and “light tactile” can differ by 10g while both being labeled light. If a spec sheet doesn’t list force, the vendor page for the switch does.
How to actually choose (without sample packs)
- Buy a hot-swap board — this converts the question from a research problem into a $12 experiment. It’s the single best decision a beginner makes.
- Pick your first family in 30 seconds: gaming-first → linear; typing/writing-first → tactile; solo office + love of clicky sounds → clicky, knowing what you’re getting into.
- Live with it two weeks. Write down what annoys you: too heavy? too easy to trigger? no feedback?
- Buy one $12–15 pack of a different family. Swap a few keys (QWERTY row is enough to judge). Swap the whole board if converted. Resell or gift the orphans.
