Keychron K2 Pro vs Q1: Wireless Plastic or Wired Aluminum? (2026)
The K2 Pro and the Q1 are Keychron’s two answers to the same question — “which 75% should I buy?” — aimed at two different buyers. Same 75% layout, same QMK/VIA programmability, same STM32L432 MCU under the hood. Then the paths fork completely: one is a plastic tray-mount board with Bluetooth and a 4000 mAh battery, the other a 1825-gram block of CNC-machined aluminum on gaskets that never leaves the cable. This comparison sticks to what the official spec pages establish — and marks clearly where the spec sheet runs out.

What they genuinely share
Both boards are full QMK programmables with live remapping through Keychron’s Launcher/VIA tooling — the same firmware ecosystem, on the same STM32L432 MCU. Both are 75% layouts with a steel plate and south-facing RGB. Both offer hot-swap on their swappable variants with 3- and 5-pin MX support (Gateron, Cherry, Kailh all explicitly listed for the Q1). And both sell barebone versions — the kit path that our first custom build guide walks through.
In other words: the software experience and the switch ecosystem are a wash. You’re choosing hardware philosophy, not firmware.
Where the K2 Pro wins
Wireless is the headline. Bluetooth 5.1 with three-device switching, a 4000 mAh battery Keychron’s lab rates at ~260 hours with backlight off (RGB on: ~130 hours at the lowest setting), plus a wired USB-C mode. The Q1 V2 has no wireless story at all — that’s Keychron’s separate Q Pro/Q Max line.
Price and weight. Plastic is cheap to ship and light to carry — about 940 g versus 1825 g. The K2 Pro also has an aluminum-frame variant (~1070 g) that buys back some rigidity without reaching Q1 territory: it’s still a tray-mount board, and Keychron’s own variant list keeps it in the K Pro series. Where the Q1 wins
The chassis is a different product category. Keychron machines the Q1 body from a 6063 aluminum billet through a 24-process finish (polished, anodized, sandblasted — their wording). The fully assembled board weighs 1825 g ± 10 g. That mass isn’t a spec vanity: it’s the physical foundation of the board’s stability on the desk.
Double-gasket construction. The Q1 (V2) mounts the plate assembly on gaskets with additional silicone layers — a structurally different design from the K2 Pro’s tray mount. What that does to sound and typing feel is the single most discussed difference in this pairing, and it’s exactly the claim we won’t repeat secondhand.
Wired-only is a gaming non-issue — and a typing guarantee. Both boards poll at 1000 Hz over Type-C. The K2 Pro’s wireless mode drops to 90 Hz polling — a figure fine for writing documents and noticeable in fast games. If your use is wired anyway, the Q1’s lack of Bluetooth costs you nothing; the K2 Pro’s wired mode matches it.
The variant trap (read before buying either)
- K2 Pro: Keychron’s page notes that the non-hot-swap “Black — Fully Assembled” variant exists with plate-mounted stabilizers and no sound-absorbing foam — a meaningfully different board from the hot-swap versions with screw-in PCB stabs. Check the exact variant dropdown, not just the product name.
- Q1 (V2): barebone ships without keycaps and switches; the knob version and multiple special editions exist (special editions carry a different MCU per the spec table). Same rule: pick the variant deliberately.
Who should buy which
- Buy the K2 Pro if you want one board for desk and couch, type more than you game, or the budget ends around the plastic-board tier. It’s the same QMK ecosystem at a lower floor.
- Buy the Q1 if you’re desk-bound, want the aluminum gasket platform as a base for switch and keycap experiments, or you’re buying your “last board first.” Pair it with our switch force guide before bulk-buying switches.
- Skip both toward the V1 if you want the QMK feature set at the lowest entry price and don’t need wireless — that’s the V1 review territory.
The honest summary: on paper these boards share a brain and a layout, and differ in everything physical. The spec sheet tells you what differs; only recordings will tell you how much it matters — and that’s the part we’ve deliberately left blank.
