Keycaps: PBT vs ABS, Double-Shot vs Dye-Sub — What Actually Matters (2026)

Keycap marketing sells magic; materials science sells four checkable facts. This guide sorts them: what PBT and ABS chemically are, why manufacturing method matters more than material for legend wear, how profiles differ, and which official store prices make the upgrade math concrete — using the boards already covered in our reviews as the worked examples.

The two materials, honestly

Epomaker’s own copy for its PBT sets — “grease- and shine-resistant, keeping a clean look and consistent feel over years of use” — is the standard manufacturer claim, and it’s the one material difference nobody disputes. Note where PC enters: the Black TH80 V2 Pro ships PC dye-sub keycaps while its White/Pink variants ship double-shot PBT (official spec table, from our Epomaker review) — proof that even one brand mixes all three materials across one board’s variants.

Manufacturing: the legend-wear hierarchy

Material decides surface feel; manufacturing method decides whether legends survive:

The premium boards in our comparisons all ship the top two methods: the V1’s “double-shot PBT, not shine-through, OSA profile” and Q1’s “double-shot keycaps” are quoted from Keychron’s official spec tables. That’s a real, spec-backed upgrade over the pad-printed stock caps of cheaper boards.

Profiles and thickness (the feel layer)

Profile is row shape: OEM and Cherry are sculpted (each row angled), OSA — Keychron’s house profile, “OEM height, SA shape” per the V1 spec table — is sculpted with spherical tops; SA is tall and retro; XDA/DSA are uniform flat tops. No profile is “better” — adaptation cost is days, and preference dominates. Thickness (thin ~1.2 mm shells vs thick 1.4–1.7 mm) changes mass and, through it, the typing experience — how it changes sound specifically is a recordings question, not a table question.

The upgrade math (official anchors)

Keychron’s own accessory store prices make the cap upgrade checkable (official prices, checked 2026-08-31): a Black Transparent OSA full set at $19.99, a Cherry-profile double-shot PBT shine-through set at $33.99, a premium dye-sub set at $49.99. Against the cost calculator’s keycap row ($25–45 default), that’s the real market band — and against the under-$100 guide’s boards, it shows why re-capping a $60 board with a $35 set is a normal, sane upgrade path.

What we can’t settle without recordings

The internet’s loudest keycap argument — “thick PBT sounds deeper” — is exactly the claim this site won’t repeat secondhand. Mass, geometry and material all plausibly shape a cap’s acoustic contribution; the A/B clips (same board, same switches, cap sets swapped) are planned and the placeholder is marked. Until then: buy PBT for surface longevity, buy double-shot/dye-sub for legend permanence, and treat every sound adjective as unverified.
