Keycaps: PBT vs ABS, Double-Shot vs Dye-Sub — What Actually Matters (2026)
Keycap marketing sells magic; materials science sells four checkable facts. This guide sorts them: what PBT and ABS chemically are, why manufacturing method matters more than material for legend wear, how profiles differ, and which official store prices make the upgrade math concrete — using the boards already covered in our reviews as the worked examples.
The two materials, honestly

Manufacturing: the legend-wear hierarchy
Material decides surface feel; manufacturing method decides whether legends survive:

Profile is row shape: OEM and Cherry are sculpted (each row angled), OSA — Keychron’s house profile, “OEM height, SA shape” per the V1 spec table — is sculpted with spherical tops; SA is tall and retro; XDA/DSA are uniform flat tops. No profile is “better” — adaptation cost is days, and preference dominates. What we can’t settle without recordings
The internet’s loudest keycap argument — “thick PBT sounds deeper” — is exactly the claim this site won’t repeat secondhand. Mass, geometry and material all plausibly shape a cap’s acoustic contribution; the A/B clips (same board, same switches, cap sets swapped) are planned and the placeholder is marked. Until then: buy PBT for surface longevity, buy double-shot/dye-sub for legend permanence, and treat every sound adjective as unverified.
